Handcrafted Clothing Rooted in Heritage Textile Tradition

Charkha & Loom was founded in Amsterdam in 2024 by Sweta Pandey, a development economist from Amsterdam with roots in India, who grew up surrounded by master craftswomen and traditional textile techniques. Every piece in our collection is made by hand using 100% Himalayan sheep's wool hand-spun by artisan women in the Kullu Valley, handspun and handwoven khadi cotton, or hand block-printed cotton stamped with carved wooden blocks and plant-based pigments.

We work directly with handloom artisan families weaving khadi cotton in Bengal and ikkat cotton in Andhra Pradesh. Our block printing is done using dabu and Sanganer techniques by a 5th generation, national award-winning artisan family in Bagru, Rajasthan. We also collaborate with the Kullvi Whims cooperative in Himachal Pradesh, where 500+ women spin, dye, and knit or weave each garment from start to finish. No factories. No fast production lines. Just handmade garments, crafted in small batches twice a year.

How It's Made
From Fibre to Fabric How Every Piece of Handcrafted Clothing is Made

Wool from the Himalayas

The Gaddi Nomadic Tribe of Himachal Pradesh has herded indigenous Himalayan sheep at altitude for centuries. The wool is sheared by hand, washed in mountain water, carded, and spun without machinery by women artisans across the Kullu Valley. The result is a thick, warm, naturally mulesing-free fibre that no factory-made wool can replicate.

Dyed with Plants, Not Chemicals

Colour comes from nature. Marigold petals for golden yellow. Madder root for deep rust red. Indigo leaves for blue. Walnut shells for rich brown. Onion skins for amber. Some of our darkest shades are created simply by mixing undyed wools no dye required at all. Every batch is slightly different. That is the nature of handcrafted clothing.

Hand-Knitted by Artisan Women

Knitwear pieces are hand-knitted by women within the Kullvi Whims cooperative. Block-print garments are stamped by hand using carved wooden blocks pressed into plant-based pigment. Each piece is inspected by our founder Sweta Pandey during on-site visits to the production locations in Himachal Pradesh.

Woven by Hand in Bengal and Telangana

Our summer handwoven pieces begin on handlooms. Khadi cotton is handspun and handwoven by artisan families in West Bengal, a slow, deliberate process where every thread is set by hand. Ikkat cotton is woven by artisans in Telangana using a resist-dyeing technique where yarn is tied and dyed before weaving, so the pattern is built directly into the fabric. Both fabrics are then cut and stitched into finished garments at 5Stitch Studio.

Block-Printed and Arashi-Dyed by Master Artisans

Summer print pieces are hand block-printed using carved wooden blocks and techniques including dabu mud-resist printing, ajrakh natural dyeing, and Sanganer pigment printing carried out by a 5th generation, national award-winning artisan family in Bagru and Ajrakhpur. Select linen-cotton dresses are dyed using the arashi technique, a Japanese pole-wrapping resist method that creates fine diagonal wave patterns, applied by artisans at 5Stitch Studio before being stitched into finished garments.

FAQ's

Our garments are made from a range of traditional Indian textiles indigenous Himalayan sheep's wool, cotton, Eri (Peace) Silk, Chanderi silk, Maheshwari silk, and handspun-handwoven khadi cotton. The Himalayan wool comes from the Gaddi Nomadic Tribe in Himachal Pradesh. Cotton and khadi pieces include hand block-printed shirts, dresses, and bazaar bags, as well as garments featuring ikkat weaving. Eri Silk, Chanderi, and Maheshwari silks are used in select scarves and blended pieces. No synthetic fibres are used in any of our apparel.

Himalayan wool comes from indigenous sheep herded by the Gaddi Nomadic Tribe in the mountain valleys of Himachal Pradesh, at altitudes above 2,000 metres. Because the sheep graze freely across high-altitude terrain, their wool grows thicker and denser than most commercially farmed breeds. It is naturally warm and breathable. The wool is sheared using a process that is kinder to the sheep and does not involve cutting any parts of their skin. It is then washed, carded, and hand-spun without machinery by artisan women in the Kullu Valley a process that produces a texture and warmth no other fibre replicates.

All colour in our wool knitwear comes from plant-based dyes. We use marigold petals for golden yellow, madder root for rust red and terracotta, indigo leaves for blue, walnut shells for brown, and onion skins for amber tones. Some of our darker shades are created simply by blending naturally dark and naturally light undyed wools with no dye required. Because each dye batch is made by hand, two pieces from the same run may carry subtly different tones. This natural variation is part of what makes each piece individual.

Every piece in our collection is made by hand from start to finish. Knitwear garments are hand-spun and hand-knitted by women artisans within the Kullvi Whims cooperative in Himachal Pradesh. Block-print pieces are stamped individually using carved wooden blocks pressed into plant-based pigment. No automated cutting, weaving, or stitching machines are used in our production. Our founder Sweta Pandey conducts personal on-site visits to production locations in India to verify processes and working conditions directly.

Our SS26 summer collection uses handspun and handwoven khadi cotton, hand block-printed cotton, Chanderi silk, and Maheshwari silk all sourced from traditional weaving and printing communities across India. No synthetic fibres are used. Each fabric is chosen for its breathability and suitability for warmer months.

Our handcrafted clothing is made across several artisan communities in India. Knitwear is produced in the Kullu Valley, Himachal Pradesh, in collaboration with women artisans from the Kullvi Whims cooperative. Our summer collection is made in partnership with 5Stitch Studio, Jaipur. Block printing is carried out by a 5th generation, national award-winning artisan family in Bagru and Sanganer, Rajasthan. We also work with a social enterprise in New Delhi that provides craft employment to Afghan women with refugee backgrounds. Our headquarters is in Amsterdam, Netherlands, where a small atelier handles finishing and quality checks. All production is handmade we do not use factory manufacturing at any stage.

Our founder Sweta Pandey works directly with artisan groups visiting production sites in person to check working conditions, wages, and craft processes. We operate under a Supplier & Manufacturer Code of Conduct that defines minimum standards for labour rights, occupational safety, working hours, pay, and non-discrimination. We do not claim third-party certification at this stage, but we are transparent about how we work and what we verify directly.

Yes. We ship from Amsterdam, Netherlands to customers across the United Kingdom including London, Manchester, Bristol, Edinburgh, and beyond. Shipping is handled via PostNL. Prices are displayed in GBP at checkout. Please check your order confirmation for estimated delivery times to your specific location.

Each design in our handcrafted clothing range is produced in very limited quantities typically 3 to 5 pieces per style for knitwear, and small runs of 15 to 20 pieces per style for our summer block-print and handwoven cotton line. Once a design sells out, it is not guaranteed to return. We recommend purchasing when you see a piece you love, as restocks are not always possible with handmade production.

Our summer collection is produced in small batches only as much as needed for the season. Once a design sells out, it is not restocked. We release two collections per year, and the SS26 summer drop is available while stock lasts. If you see a piece you love, we recommend purchasing early.

Please refer to our Returns & Exchanges page for full details on our current policy. Because each piece is handmade in limited quantities, we encourage customers to check size guides carefully before ordering. If you have questions about sizing or fit before purchasing, contact us directly and we will help you choose the right piece. Can't find your size or need a larger size? message us.
