Himalayan Wool vs Merino Wool: Which Is Warmer?

Not all wool is equal. A hand-knitted sweater from a Kullu Valley cooperative and a fine merino base layer from an Australian sheep farm are both technically wool  but they behave differently on the body, wear differently over time, and cost very different amounts of money. The question of which is warmer, and which is right for what you actually want to wear, is not academic. It changes what you should buy.

This is a first-hand comparison of Himalayan wool vs merino wool, written for anyone deciding between the two. It covers real fibre data, micron thickness, crimp density, CLO thermal values  and where each wool actually outperforms the other, tested against how we make our own hand-knitted knitwear and what we've observed across seasons.

We're Charkha & Loom, an Amsterdam-based handcrafted clothing brand founded by Sweta Pandey in 2024. Our knitwear is hand-spun and hand-knitted from 100% Himalayan wool by over 500 women artisans in the Kullvi Whims cooperative in Himachal Pradesh, using fleece sourced from Gaddi and Bhakarwal sheep herded by nomadic pastoral communities across the Western Himalayas. Sweta personally visits production locations every year and has spent time with both the herders and the knitting cooperative. The first-hand observations in this guide come from those visits.

 

The Short Answer

Himalayan wool is warmer than merino wool in cold-weather outerwear because the fibres are thicker (28–34 microns vs 17–24 microns) and have higher loft, trapping more air per gram of material. It also carries roughly 20% more natural lanolin, which improves water-repellency in wet cold. However, merino outperforms Himalayan wool in three specific cases: base-layer next-to-skin softness, active moisture management during exercise, and lightweight travel knitwear.

If you want the warmest outer garment, choose Himalayan wool. If you want a soft, fine base layer or something that packs small, choose merino. Serious cold-weather wardrobes usually include both.

1. Where Each Wool Comes From

Himalayan Wool

Himalayan wool is a broad term covering fleece from indigenous sheep breeds native to the Western Himalayan region, primarily Gaddi and Bhakarwal sheep in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir, and Bhutia sheep further east. These animals live at altitudes between 2,000 and 4,500 metres, grazing across high-altitude pasture in summer and moving down to lower valleys in winter. The nomadic pastoral communities that herd them, the Gaddi Nomadic Tribe, most prominently have been doing so for over 700 years.

Because the sheep face genuine mountain conditions, their fleece is adapted for extreme cold. The fibres grow thicker, with a denser lanolin coating, longer staple lengths, and higher natural crimp than sheep bred in flat pasture climates. Their annual shearing produces a slightly coarser wool than merino, but with markedly better thermal properties.

In our supply chain, this raw fleece is hand-spun into yarn on charkhas, traditional spinning wheels  by artisan women in the Kullu Valley, then hand-knitted into finished garments by the Kullvi Whims cooperative in Himachal Pradesh.

Merino Wool

Merino wool comes from a single sheep breed  the Merino, originally developed in Spain but now farmed mainly in Australia (which produces roughly 80% of the world's merino), New Zealand, South Africa, and Patagonia. Merino sheep were selectively bred over centuries for one main characteristic: finer wool. Modern merino fibres are typically 17 to 24 microns in diameter, roughly a third of a human hair's thickness.

Because merino is farmed at a commercial scale, most of the wool is machine-processed, chemically treated (often with a chlorine wash to make it machine-washable, which is called "superwash" treatment), and industrially spun. The result is soft, fine, uniform, and extremely useful, but processed further from its natural state than most Himalayan wool.

Numbers are drawn from Woolmark, the International Wool Textile Organisation (IWTO), and independent textile research from the University of Leeds. The two most important rows here are fibre diameter and crimp density. Those two properties do most of the work when we talk about warmth.

3. Warmth Explained: Why Fibre Diameter and Crimp Matter

Wool doesn't warm you by producing heat  it warms you by trapping air. Air is a poor heat conductor, so the more air a fabric holds against your skin, the less body heat escapes to the surroundings. Everything else about wool warmth follows from this.

Fibre Diameter

Thicker fibres create larger air pockets. A Himalayan wool sweater at 200 grams per square metre (gsm) contains fibres that are, on average, 40% thicker than a merino sweater at the same weight. That means larger insulating air spaces between fibres, and higher thermal resistance.

This is measured in CLO  a unit of thermal insulation used in the textile industry. A 200 gsm Himalayan wool fabric measures around 2.9 CLO. A 200 gsm merino fabric measures around 2.4 CLO. In practical terms, that gap is roughly the difference between comfortable and cold on a still winter morning at 0°C.

Crimp Density

Crimp is the natural wave pattern in a wool fibre. It looks like a very fine spring under a microscope. Crimp is what gives wool its loft  the springy fullness that lets it recover shape after being compressed.

Merino has more crimps per centimetre (12–20 vs Himalayan wool's 6–8), which sounds like it should mean more loft. But finer, more numerous crimps create smaller, denser air pockets  which are better for base-layer thermoregulation but worse for pure insulation. Himalayan wool's fewer, larger crimps create bigger air pockets and higher loft. This is why hand-knitted Himalayan wool jumpers look and feel plumper than industrially spun merino jumpers at the same weight.

Lanolin

Lanolin is the natural grease wool sheep produce to waterproof their own coats. Himalayan wool retains 5 to 15% lanolin by weight even after hand-washing, because traditional preparation methods don't strip it out aggressively. Merino wool loses most of its lanolin during industrial scouring, and superwash treatments remove nearly all of it. Lanolin genuinely matters in cold: it makes the fabric less permeable to wet snow and light rain, which keeps you warmer for longer in variable conditions.

4. Softness: Which One Actually Feels Better?

Merino wins this comparison, cleanly. There's no way around it  merino fibres at 17 to 24 microns are physically finer than Himalayan wool at 28 to 34 microns, and the human skin registers thicker fibres as slightly more "prickly." The prickle threshold for most people is around 30 microns. Below that, wool feels soft against the skin. Above, some people register it as itchy or scratchy against sensitive areas like the neck and inner arms.

This is why merino dominates the base-layer market  it can be worn directly against the skin without discomfort. Fine merino t-shirts are so soft that most people cannot tell them apart from high-end cotton.

Himalayan wool is warmer, but it's also more textured. Most people find it perfectly comfortable worn over a shirt or base layer. Worn directly next to sensitive skin, some people find it slightly scratchy  particularly at the collar. This is not a defect of the wool. It is the physical consequence of the same thicker fibres that make Himalayan wool warmer in the first place. You cannot have both maximum warmth and maximum next-to-skin softness in a single wool type.

The practical answer, which is how many mountain communities have dressed for centuries: wear a fine base layer next to the skin, and Himalayan wool over the top.

5. Warmth By Use Case: Which to Choose When

The Himalayan wool vs merino question doesn't have a single correct answer. It depends on what you're doing. Here's a use-case-by-use-case breakdown.

The general rule: Himalayan wool is a passive-insulation wool. It excels when the wearer is not moving much and needs to stay warm. Merino is a thermoregulating wool. It excels when body heat and moisture output vary during activity, sleep, or variable temperature conditions.

6. Cost, Value, and How Long Each Lasts

A hand-knitted Himalayan wool sweater typically costs €150 to €400, sometimes more for larger pieces. A merino sweater from a major retailer typically costs €50 to €200, with premium merino brands (Icebreaker, Smartwool, Woolrich) at €120 to €300. The prices reflect very different production models.

Himalayan wool prices reflect labour costs. A single hand-knitted jumper takes an experienced artisan 40 to 80 hours to complete, on top of the hand-spinning of yarn (another 15 to 30 hours) and the herding, shearing, and hand-cleaning of the raw fleece. The Kullvi Whims cooperative pays its knitters directly, so the labour cost is honest rather than compressed.

Merino prices reflect scale. Modern merino processing is highly automated. Fleece is bought at commercial auctions, scoured industrially, spun on machinery, and knitted in high-volume factories, mostly in Asia. Even premium merino brands rarely involve significant hand labour beyond finishing details.

On lifespan, Himalayan wool wins comfortably. A well-cared-for hand-knitted Himalayan wool jumper often lasts 10 to 20 years or more, particularly if repaired occasionally. Merino jumpers typically last 5 to 10 years  the finer fibres wear through, pill, and thin out sooner. The cost-per-wear calculation often ends up in Himalayan wool's favour, provided you actually wear it enough.

7. Sustainability and Sourcing: The Ethical Comparison

The two wools have very different sustainability profiles. This isn't marketing  the differences are structural.

Two points worth flagging, honestly. First: not all merinos use mulesing (a controversial practice where skin is removed from lambs to prevent flystrike). Reputable brands specifically source non-mulesed merino, and consumers can find this information on labels. But mulesing does still occur in a portion of the Australian merino supply chain, and it's the single most-raised ethical concern about merino wool.

Second: Himalayan wool avoids these industrial-scale issues entirely, but it depends on the health and continuity of nomadic pastoral communities. That means brands that source Himalayan wool have a specific responsibility to work with, pay fairly, and protect the livelihoods of the herding and knitting communities, not just to buy their output. In our own case, Sweta visits herding areas and the Kullvi Whims cooperative directly. The relationship is direct and long-term.

8. First-Hand Notes from a Season of Testing

Beyond the fibre data, here are direct observations from a full winter of wearing both wool types across a range of European conditions from mild Amsterdam winters (0 to 8°C most days) to alpine trips into the mountains (−10 to −20°C).

At around 0°C in still air, a mid-weight Himalayan wool cardigan over a cotton shirt felt roughly as warm as a mid-weight merino jumper worn under a coat. Insulation-wise, they were comparable  but the Himalayan felt drier in light rain because the lanolin genuinely does repel moisture.

At −10°C and below, the difference became obvious. A merino base layer plus Himalayan wool mid-layer plus outer coat was warmer than three merino layers of the same total weight. The larger air pockets in Himalayan wool matter more when it's genuinely cold.

During three days of continuous city travel, a merino jumper was clearly the better choice. It packed down smaller in a bag, dried faster after a rainy afternoon, and could be worn on all three days without smelling. A Himalayan wool jumper worn for three days develops a strong wool smell, pleasant if you like the material, off-putting if you don't.

For sedentary outdoor use, sitting outside a café, going to a game, or standing at a market, Himalayan wool was noticeably warmer at every temperature. This aligns with the fibre data.

For active use, walking briskly, hiking, cycling, merino handled sweat much better. Himalayan wool held the sweat inside the fibre for longer and started to feel damp on the skin around the 45-minute mark of continuous exertion.

On drying speed after washing, merino won cleanly. A hand-washed merino jumper was dry in 12 to 18 hours flat. A hand-washed Himalayan wool jumper took 36 to 48 hours.

The overall conclusion, from actually wearing them both across a season: Himalayan wool is a winter outerwear wool, and merino is a next-to-skin and active wool. They complement each other. A good cold-weather wardrobe usually includes both. Himalayan wool at 28–34 microns sits closer to that threshold, so some people notice a slight textured feel next to the skin. Worn over a base layer, both are comfortable. Next to the skin, merino wins on softness.

Is merino wool the same as sheep wool?

Merino wool is a specific type of sheep wool, from the Merino sheep breed. "Sheep wool" as a general term covers dozens of breeds, of which Merino is one  alongside Gaddi (source of Himalayan wool), Icelandic, Shetland, Bluefaced Leicester, and many others. All are wool. Merino is prized for its unusually fine fibre diameter compared with most other sheep breeds.

Which wool lasts longest?

Can I wear Himalayan wool if I have sensitive skin?

Yes, with a base layer. Himalayan wool worn directly against very sensitive skin can feel slightly textured because of the thicker fibre diameter. Worn over a lightweight cotton or silk base layer, it's comfortable for nearly everyone. Do I need both Himalayan wool and merino in my wardrobe?

Ideally, yes. The two wools complement each other. Merino works as a next-to-skin base layer and lightweight travel knitwear where softness and moisture management matter most. Himalayan wool works as mid-layer or outerwear insulation where warmth matters most. A wardrobe that includes one merino base layer and one Himalayan wool outer knit handles most European winter conditions comfortably.
